Andriod – Cellphone gaming!

Ever since I got my hands on a real cellphone, and by that I mean a smart phone (Galaxy S3), I have been scouring the mounds of garbage android based games… and yes there are mounds… in a desperate attempt to find a handful that are worth playing. I keep my phone at my side at all times so it’s nice to be able to whip it out and have a quick game to kill some time with.

Over the past few years android games have been becoming more and more popular. The medium has even sparked it’s own console system (albeit a pretty sad excuse for one .. but that’s a different issue all together) Android based games are becoming nearly as recognizable as Iso games (Iphone – Ipad). But why is it these games have a developer base? Well from the way I understand it – most console systems all require the game developers to purchase a license to be able design games for their system. They also take some serious royalties from the developers which pretty much takes the indie developers out of the running. This is a shame because there are many really good games out there that never have the chance to see the light of day. The Android system doesn’t do that and as a result there is almost a flood gate of games that are out there. Anyyyways …. Here is a list of the games I deemed awesome and actually play quite a bit:

 1. Marvel Puzzle Quest

Candy Crush is a popular game on Facebook at them moment (maybe even as popular as Farmville) and this is pretty close to a straight up rip off of the game with Superheroes. as everyone knows Superheroes have always attracted me so that was a win for me. This is a great game to play for 5 minutes and chuck it back in your pocket as it’s really easy to fire up and game and wrap up. Having said that – This one falls on my list of games even though I know it’s a painful money grab from Disney and Marvel. It’s a free download but it’s totally a pay to win game that pushes you constantly to shell out your hard earned cash.

2. Pixel Dungeon

I can’t push this game enough. Pixel Dungeon is a throwback to the days of “Roguelike” games from the 80’s and early 90’s the one in particular that I remember was “Moria” back on the old Macintoshs in junior high. Not sure what a rougelike game is? For those of you old enough to remember; These games were know for Random level generation, tile-based graphics and permanent death. Roguelikes descend from the 1980 game Rogue, particularly mirroring Rogue’s character- or sprite-based graphics, turn-based gameplay that gives the player the time to plan each move, and high fantasy setting. Fun fact – Diablo 1 was inspired by this genre!

3. Devils Attorney

This is a turn based game with some seriously awesome Humor. You play a straight up Sleazy scumbag attorney, who kinda reminds me a smart Zap Brainigan. Your job is to get all these obviously guilty criminals off during their trial. The game is played out like a turn based RPG strategy game with all the “attacks” as different ridiculous court Jargon. The Humor in this game is what makes it come together and it is all completely voice acted with cut scenes. The only complaint I have with this one is that it is very short and can be played through in 3 or 4 hours if you are good at these types of games. Despite that this game is definitely worth checking out!

4. Game Dev Story

This game made me go cross eyed several times. The interface is stupid simple and the screed RARELY changes it’s view for you – but it is so insanely addictive that I most likely burned 30 battery charges on it. You take control of a start-up video game developer, with the goal of making hit titles and consoles in order to make money. You control a number of factors which can help or hinder the quality of the games released, including hiring staff, controlling the direction and speed of development, and using items which give boosts for workers or change their jobs. As you progresses and earns more money, their building is improved upon and they are allowed to hire more staff, and thus create better games. Highly recommend this one!

5. Dungeon Village

This is another game made by the same developer of Game Dev Story. The spin one is that you are in control of a village in a stereotypical RPG setting. The main goal of the game is to attract heroes to your town and direct them to fight monsters outside of the city’s limits. In order to attract heroes, you must have the city hold events which attract outside attention and fame, and must improve their city by building new buildings. As monsters arrive, the player can direct heroes to perform quests and give them gifts so they become more favorable to the city. I played this one during my lunches at work! I easily put more then 50 hours into this one all together.

6. Plague Inc.

Ever wanted to watch the world burn? No I don’t mean like the Joker from the Dark Knight – I mean like a horrific Virus giving everyone explosive diarrhea and insanity till they all crap themselves to death on a global scale. I’m not even kidding. Plague is a strategy-simulation game in which the player controls a plague which has infected patient zero. Your job is to infect and kill the whole world population by evolving the plague and adapting to various environments. However, there is a time pressure to complete the game before humans, the opponent, develop a cure for the plague. If you ever say through the movie contagion you will pretty much have a good grasp on how this game operates. Kill the world by using your evil stratigies to inflitrate the population without them knowing and then evolve into the most insane killer virus the world has ever known!! Don’t skip this one.
