Panzers Costume Corner: Skeletor, The REAL master of the universe P1

Recently someone asked me, “So Panzer. What nerdy costume are you going to tackle next? You know, because you’re so nerdy?” I responded with a simply shrug. I suppose that wasn’t enough of an answer… “You should do Skeletor, you’re a skinny out of shape guy!” A quick look at my budging bicep and…

Skeletor it is.

Who is Skeletor? Masters of the Universe main antagonist. He-mans archenemy. The monster that lives under every five year olds bed (20 years ago). The muscular blue Man with a bright purple hood over his yellowing bare-bone skull in a cartoon series from 1985. That’s who he is.

I was planning on relooking at the Panzer costume, but it looks like the pepakura for that is still a ways from being completed. So I hit my local shoppers drug mart. I happened to remember that about a month ago that they were selling really bad Halloween costumes. Odds are no one would want them and they may still be waiting for a home. I figured that they may have some old stock I could pickup cheaply.

Jackpot.

No price tag though. But, its two months after Halloween – there is no way this could be remotely expensive. After a quick swipe at check out she asks for $20.00. I look at her and ask her if she’s crazy. She agrees and then drops the price to $4.00 *remember this ladies and gentleman: you can dispute ticketed prices!*

Okay… so I have a golden skull mask. Last time I checked Skeletor was yellow. We’d better fix that….

sanded off the top layer of gold paint and removed all the weird cloth.

Primed in black.

Layer of grey to let the lighter colors lay over top the black better.

First coat of Yellow… now he’s looking a little closer!

Skipped ahead a little – 4th coat of yellow.

Little hard to see here… but I added a green wash to the darker area between the teeth and around the eyes. Green detailing.

Final shot; Done! I think it looks quite a bit closer to where it should be to represent the character! I’ll re-add fresh cloth screens when I get a chance to let it disguise the visible parts of the wearer face. What do you think?
