Pre-Raid Mana Buffs : Why is it so popular?

Why do we consume alcoholic beverages at all?

Back before modern technology made preserving consumables possible, the masses drank alcoholic beverages because it was the only thing they could be sure wouldn’t kill them.  The side effect of it making them forget all their earthly troubles was a total bonus.

Fast forward to present day, where there are many more options for hydration besides the ones kept potable by microorganisms.  So, why do we continue to drink?

Social Lubrication

It’s easier to have a conversation with the cute girl from down the hall after  glass of wine.  It also makes any imperfections you possess seem less noticeable.  Hmm…. you’d better get her a second glass on that note.  The first thing that goes out the window is your inhibitions.  Bye Bye inner monologue.  You’re going to say what you’ve been thinking for weeks about the person in front of you.  You should be golden if you keep it to 1 drink every 30-45 minutes. That’s a long time to nurse a beer, but with good conversation it’s a natural pace.

Escape

Plain and simple people are creatures of addictions.  I’m addicted to Gaming (The first step is admitting it right?).  My escape is virtual.  Many people escape using psychoactive stimulants or depressants.  Alcohol is the latter.  Consuming a six-pack is a good way to forget about the shitty day you’ve had.  It’s also a good way to get in serious trouble.  Keep it classy comrade, and keep the puking to once a year.

Cool Factor

Peer pressure is a crutch, but a lot of individuals drink to fit.  Sex in the City popularized the Cosmopolitan.  The same phenom can be said for Cristal. A fine champagne to be sure, but it rhymes easily so many rappers use it in their lyrics.  It’s a pop culture icon that makes it ‘cool’ and the masses follow.

The way I see it

When you and you’re friends gather, in VoiP or in Person, enjoy a cocktail and toast life.  I’ll give you two of my standards.

When meeting new people:

“Here’s to my family and friends.  The ones present, and he one’s I’ve yet to meet.”

When toasting a birthday:

“May you live forever, or die trying!”

/cheers

Note:  The Rat Pack were some Hard Core, Cool, Escapists.  I figured it was fitting.
