Panzers Costume Corner: Building Swtor Panzer Part 2

So, If you all remember I’ve been working with a model designer named Firefek on the replica forums since last summer. I was trying to get him to design a Pepakura File (See Building Swtor Panzer Part 1) for my character Helmet in Star Wars. If you remember I was planning to get together a Halloween costume of my in game character and show off how hard core geeky I am! After accessing the costs and the time involved in putting in together; I decided to go to my fallback which was Magneto.

Shortly after Halloween I commissioned Firefek to design the 3d model I needed to begin working on the project. It took him four whole months to design but I found in in my mail box 2 weeks ago … and the project began! If any of you remember my Magneto build, the concept is very similar. It starts with paper! The shell is created, then it is fiberglass, bondo’d and then finally sanded and painted. Total time for this portion of the project? 15 hours!

This Helmet is considerably more hard core then the magneto helmet which was essentially just a dome. I recruited Lora to give me a hand cutting and organizing. The sheer amount of pieces made me want to cry.

Easily the most difficult portion of this build is not knowing if you are putting it together right at first. There is nothing to tell you the shape you’re building is correct, so you just have to go with it and, as Lora kept telling me, “It will look fine.”

After getting the ears on I was starting to think it was going to work. Until this point I was getting discouraged. After this things started to get easier! The little eye flaps were very encouraging, made me feel like it was working!

Joey (My little brother) was forced to model the helmet for us 🙂

The rest of the details, rivets, ear buds .. etc. Will be added after the fiberglass phase, which is next! Stay tuned!
